FMLA or Family Medical Leave Act labor law requires covered employers to give employees a job-protected and unpaid leave for qualified medical and family reasons. The current circumstances covered by the 1993 US law are available on the United States Department of Labor site (http://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fml) for full information  about qualifying events, such as caring for a sick relative, birth of a child or active military duty.
